July was a brutal month in the Aegean Sea.
Aegean Boat Report documented 33 illegal pushbacks carried out by the Hellenic Coast Guard. 793 people – children clutching their parents, terrified women, and exhausted men – were denied their legal right to seek asylum. Their human rights were trampled by the Greek government.
The numbers are rising fast. Pushback cases in July were up 73.7% from June. The number of people forced back grew by 48.2%.
In 10 incidents, the cruelty was even more blatant: 215 people were loaded into 14 inflatable life rafts – equipment meant for saving lives – and left to drift helplessly in open waters. These life raft cases made up 27.1% of all pushbacks in July, a staggering 400% increase from the month before.
Since January 2020, we have documented 3,449 pushbacks in the Aegean Sea, involving 94,633 men, women, and children. In 1,113 of those cases, 29,527 people were abandoned in 1,705 life rafts – deliberately left to the mercy of the sea.
This is not border protection.
This is a systematic assault on human dignity.
If we don’t document this, who will?
