Aaron Donald…Legend, Champion, Forever a Ram
By: @lukefrantzz
Aaron Donald has announced his retirement after an incredible 10 year career. This announcement comes as a surprise to many, but after the incredible 2021-2022 Super Bowl run, questions about his retirement have surfaced every off-season since.
The year is 2014, a struggling St Louis Rams team drafts Aaron Donald with the 13th overall selection. Entering the draft Aaron Donald was a dominant force coming out of Pittsburgh with his only downside being his size. Donald quickly put those doubts to rest as he went on to win defensive rookie of the year and looked to turn around the Rams defense moving forward.
In 2015 the St Louis Rams announced they’d be moving home to Los Angeles with a promise of bringing the stars to the city made for them. Aaron Donald under the bright lights lit up opposing offenses, Donald has been awarded the defensive player of the year award three times, becoming the third player to ever do so. In 2015, ‘16, ‘17, ‘18, ‘19, and ‘21 Aaron Donald was named all-pro and throughout his entire career he was the leader of the Rams defense.
The year is 2021, the Rams have announced the trade for star quarterback Matthew Stafford, giving the team an immediate chance at a Super Bowl. By this time the defense has been built around Aaron Donald and star corner Jalen Ramsey who was acquired in 2019, Donald held down the front, Ramsey held down the secondary. During the ‘21-‘22 season the Rams acquired legendary pass rusher Von Miller at the trade deadline to complement Donald on the way to a Super Bowl run. As it would turn out, it happened, the legendary Aaron Donald sealed both the NFC championship and Super Bowl to finally get a ring.
Two years since the Super Bowl run and the Rams look primed to make another run at it with the stars still in place, unfortunately as it looks now, one of those stars will not be shining, and rather a sombor moment in retirement fills its spot. As the Rams start to move forward without their star defensive tackle it is important to remember the legacy Donald is leaving with the franchise, All-pro, Defensive Player of the Year, Champion, Legend, but above all else, forever a Ram.
