Over the past while, myself and @vinniewall2 have been working on putting a letter together to the @OireachtasNews Climate and Health committees, with the objective of persuading them to work to get the Leinster House garden restored.
Today, we sent the letter. Thread:
@deborahbyrnefyi Can't help but feel that in other cities every bar/restaurant/hotel would open on to the laneway, it'd be paved nicely, bins hidden away, no cars, decorated with art, string lighting etc. Hell even a bunch of umbrellas have animated Anne's Lane behind Cafe en Seine
@IrishCycle @JackKavanagh12 As so many DCC projects tend to do.
But with the NTA and DCC both moving to Smithfield, maybe it'll get prioritised again...
An enterprising @DubCityCouncil would increase parking charges for the day on the surrounding streets by a factor of 10 (& in the case of streets that have free weekend parking, start charging) and use the proceeds to improve the crumbling pedestrian infrastructure in the area.
This annual pain-in-the-hole for residents is going to get worse as more of the campus is completed in coming years, and parents descend on the neighbourhood in growing numbers in their Mercs and Teslas to deliver their precious little darlings to the front door of the campus.
TU Dublin will host its Open Day in Grangegorman on Saturday, 02 December, from 10 am to 2 pm. Online registration is required in advance so please register at https://t.co/AqJ9RyrXjh #tudublinopenday#wearetudublin#gobeyondlearning
@jnrbaker @ciaradowd2 @_helenblackmore @DubCityCouncil My advice is to find like minded people/busineses in the neighbourbood (the closer to Arbour Hill, the better), build a coalition, and then reach out to councillors
@jnrbaker @ciaradowd2 @_helenblackmore @DubCityCouncil It's a big rat run for drivers looking to avoid using the quays. A permeability filter ala Grangegorman would solve that issue, reduce traffic down to just the odd local coming and going, and the width of the street wouldn't be a big problem then. The street would be transformed
"The group said that the council should follow cities like Ghent and Oslo which pushed through car traffic out of the city centre while still allowing car access"
https://t.co/YeaK36No8S
"the car in which they were travelling came off of a rooftop"
Garda spokesperson: "a vehicle drove through the guard rail"
The mental backflips journalists and garda will do to avoid blaming drivers for their shitty behaviour is comical

Spotted part of the older fascia peaking out on this store on Capel Street.
It'd be lovely if this shop owner were to remove the ugly, oversized fascia and restore the older, smaller one underneath, but I'm not too optimistic.
Youโll literally have a policy like โmake air cleanerโ after an EPA report on pollution, and radio stations will invite on the CEO of Blowing Smoke in Babies Faces Ltd to blabber on about how itโll hurt quarterly profits by 2%.
@ciarancannon@IrishCycle 25 is perfect for urban areas but i think there's a case to be made for geofencing and allowing higher speeds in rural areas. Feels perverse to be capped at 25 while being passed by cars doing 100. A common 20km rural journey would be a lot more feasible at 40 than 25
With motorway toll rises in the news today, reposting a piece @mu_lynch and I wrote a few weeks ago arguing we need to fundamentally reform the way we tax driving (including tolls).

@SusanTheSilent@Colum_McCaffery Walk down Capel Street in the morning and it isn't subtle!
Have seen it on Grafton Street and Henry Street in the mornings too, though it's much less common
@CorpChien Well, I think the various health, climate, economic and social benefits from pedestrianisation tend to dramatically outweigh the convenience of drivers getting heavy goods slightly quicker, but you're entitled to your view
@CorpChien I don't have to imagine, my mum has MS. She relies on disabled bays which are obviously important.
Heavy goods get delivered.
It's good that you have green spaces near you. People living in cities need nice things too.
