@EdoPoliceNG I am willing to provide further informations if needed for your investigation and identification of the involved officers. I will also submit an official petition to the state CID and force headquarters Abuja.
I'm putting this petition online to be sure it's not neglected.
@EdoPoliceNG I write to formally report a violation of my fundamental human rights by officers of the Okhoro Police Division, Edo State Command, which occurred on the night of Friday, 12th June 2026 at exactly 8:10 pm.
Details of Incident: ๐
@EdoPoliceNG 5. Ensure restitution for the violation of my fundamental rights to personal liberty and dignity, as guaranteed under Sections 34 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [as amended]
@EdoPoliceNG 4. Issue a directive to prevent further harassment, unlawful arrests, and extortion of innocent citizens within the jurisdiction of Okhoro Police Division.
@EdoPoliceNG 2. Investigate the Divisional Police Officer [DPO] of Okhoro Police Division, who I understand recently assumed office, for allegedly authorizing unlawful raids and extortion of citizens.
@EdoPoliceNG In light of the above, I respectfully request that your office:
1. Investigate the conduct of the officers of Okhoro Police Division involved in this incident, particularly the mass arrest of persons without reasonable suspicion on 12th June 2026.
@EdoPoliceNG 5. *Release:* I was only released on the afternoon of Saturday, 13th June 2026, after the intervention of a human rights lawyer who was contacted on my behalf. This means I spent approximately 18 hours unlawfully detained in the police cell.
@EdoPoliceNG Having knowledge that demanding money for bail is unlawful under Section 107 of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 and a violation of my rights, I refused to pay. As a result, I was kept in detention until Saturday afternoon, 13th June 2026.
@EdoPoliceNG 3: Demand for Illegal Payment:* While in custody, officers demanded that detainees pay money for "bail" and for their release. This was presented as a condition for regaining freedom.
4. Refusal and Continued Detention:
@EdoPoliceNG *Detention Without Charge: I was taken to Okhoro Police Station and detained overnight. At no point was I informed of any allegation against me. No statement was taken from me, nor was I allowed to write one.
@EdoPoliceNG 1Unlawful Arrest:* At approximately 8:10 PM on Friday, 12th June 2026, I was arrested by officers of the Okhoro Police Division along friendship Street while I was returning from were I went to purchase fruits. I was not informed of any offence I had committed.
