Altruism holds that self-sacrifice is the good, that the able exist for the sake of the needy, and that need is a blank check on the lives of those who have. Cast Israel as the haves and Gaza as the needy, and the massacre becomes a moral collection. October 7 was the creed of sacrifice paid in full, and the smile is the smile of a man watching his morality come true.

The same creed disarms the decent. Men who know the celebration is evil cannot condemn it without condemning sacrifice itself, and they have been taught that sacrifice is the essence of virtue. So they evade, and evasion is the only sanction evil needs.
