Truth: Smoking DOES NOT protect against Covid-19 or long Covid.

Multiple meta-analyses show current and former smokers have higher risks of severe Covid-19, hospitalization, progression to critical illness, and death (often 30-50% increased risk or odds ratios around 1.2-1.6)

Smoking damages lungs, impairs immune function consistent with worse respiratory outcomes.

Nicotine does not block the spike protein in a clinically meaningful way. Nicotine is harmful and addictive and there is no sound evidence to recommend nicotine patches for long Covid.

This fits a pattern with McCulloughs usual highlighting contrarian or emerging ideas with some basis, but often with less nuance than the broader literature supports. Smoking is terrible for you.
