So why do people feel humid in hot weather?

It’s the effect of temperature on air.

If temperatures are high the air will absorb and hold a significantly higher moisture content than when temperatures are lower.

As temperatures increase the amount of moisture air absorbs increases rapidly, however when temperatures drop even slightly the air will cease to hold as much moisture and this may change from gaseous form to liquid which can feel quite humid especially as temperatures drop for instance in the evening.

During the winter the reverse is true cold air will naturally hold far less amounts of moisture especially in the out door cold, however in doors with heaters on, the air temperature increases and this same air starts absorbing whatever moisture it can find causing the air to become quite dry.

However if the temperature drops again such as when heaters are turned off a build up of moisture may ensue.

Even the BBC makes the same misleading statements about “humidity”.

Stating “humidity” will fall in the next few days yet showing a photo with dried grass and there is even a water hose ban in place. In actual sense there is no such thing as just “humidity” it’s either absolute humidity or relative humidity with low relative humidity responsible for dry weather and this is in conditions where absolute humidity maybe quite high.

Due to the low density of high absolute humidity air it floats upwards towards the clouds ultimately forming the dark grey clouds full of moisture.

Meanwhile air with low water content has a higher density and will sink towards the ground to pick up moisture resulting in a conventional current where dry air sinks and wet air floats.

So stating that humidity will drop in the next few days can actually be misleading…
