The deliberately low sentencing in the Gisele Pelicot case is distressing for women in France and across the world. If a drugged and sleeping 72 year old victim, subjected to the most horrific rapes imaginable and at the encouragement of her rapist husband, cannot obtain maximum verdicts in her case and for every guilty man - what hope is there for any victim who has to fight against the incredible prejudice and stereotyping of rape victims ingrained in the judicial system globally when women seek justice after sexual violence? What hope? Very little. Seriously depressing.

Just saw on the news that sex crimes aren't usually even investigated by the French police. It was only because one young policeman decided to go against the grain and investigate Dominique Pelicot's upskirting crimes that Gisèle found out what was being done to her. Bloody hell.

Gisele Pelicot’s perpetrator husband was found guilty of all charges.

He recruited 50 men to rape her with him over a period of years after he drugged her so she was unconscious during the assaults. He filmed the attacks and police found more than 20,000 videos and photographs of the rapes on her husband’s devices in a folder titled “Abuse.”

The shame is on him and the prison bars are now around him.

They then misplaced his DNA sample, despite it matching a 1999 violent attempted rape.
In 2011 Dominique started drugging and raping Gisele.

For me there’s only one contender for Person of the Year.
Gisele Pelicot.
The woman who has recalibrated how we think about rape by refusing to feel shame.
“It’s time we change the way we look at rape”, she said outside the court today.
And…more than anyone I can think of… she’s done that.
“Shame must change sides”, she said, and perhaps – perhaps – that is a little more true today than it’s ever been.
But there’s something else that I want to talk about. Something that’s much more difficult to confront than the inspiration and dignity of Gisele Pelicot.
51 men.
51 men who are not all men… but who are also quite a lot of men. 51 of them in fact.
And if you read about them… their backgrounds… their jobs… their families or lack of family… they’re all quite different.
A firefighter…a nurse… an unemployed alcoholic.
Some were abused as children. Some had comfortable upbringings with kids of their own.
Six had domestic violence convictions. 45 didn’t.
One was 27. Another was 74.
There’s no pattern here. Nothing we can point to. Other than the fact there is no profile of a rapist. Which is perhaps the most frightening thing of all.
