Shane Steichen left Herbert and went to the Super Bowl with Hurts
Kellen Moore left Herbert and won a Super Bowl with Hurts
But, sure, THIS is something we gotta take seriously 🤣🤣🤣
This is why the Eagles lead the league in 3 and outs.
No holes on 1st down.
OL Penalty on 2nd down.
Short run on on 2nd and long.
Screen pass on 3rd and long.
Punt on 4th down.
The key part of the surplus (other than comp picks) was the Eagles being open to a 2026 pick when trading Haason Reddick in the spring of 2024.
Howie Roseman needed to wait past the '24 and '25 drafts to realize the compensation for a high-level player, but he operated with a longer time horizon (and some would argue, the benefit of being able to operate with a longer time horizon) to get the third-round pick in the deal. Some of the Eagles' best moves have been with the benefit of down-the-line picks.
The Eagles had an extra second-round pick in 2024 to trade up for Cooper DeJean because of a trade they made in 2022.
There's a school of thought that Roseman can operate this way because of job security. But the way Jeffrey Lurie sees it, it's the other way around — Roseman has that job security because he operates this way.
Thoughts from both sides of this deal:
Eagles: They land one of the top players available at a key position of need. Phillips is only 26 and if this works for the rest of the season, he could have a future beyond this season.
Dolphins: The right play. For a 2-7 team, they need to think future and acquire draft capital when available. If Phillips departed in free agency, they might have landed a solid compensatory pick, but that would not be better than this pick and it would not be until 2027. Good business.
