I think I’m done with Twitter for a while. I don’t know if I’ll be back. I’m tired of Elon’s nonsense. I’ll be over on threads so I can be anxious about the ethics of a different tech billionaire.
@viperaspec@jbouie Would have been more interesting to see him start as a Luke-ish idealist with aspirations of heroism and then developing his roguish qualities over the course of the story
@jbouie Some of my favorite parts of Solo and Rogue One where were they showed life under Imperial occupation and I could have done with a lot more of that
@jbouie Feels like you can see the seams stitching together what could have been with what was, namely the killing off of the crime team way too early, the shoehorned callbacks, and the ungainly plot turns towards the Sith and the Rebellion
Has anybody ever whiffed it harder than Marvel, going from a should-be-impossible capper of 20+ films that is generally beloved and wildly successful to whatever the fuck they’ve been doing since Spider-Man got one-upped by a VFX/AR artist?
@Papapishu Feels like so much of what is wrong with most approaches to cyberpunk is treating it like neon power fantasy instead of neon existential dread in the shadow of implacable power structures
@JacksonBoren Shoe fits, given Ebert called it the best looking bad movie he’d ever seen and Ridley seeming to go after that title every third or fourth film
At least a couple of these were more about the spiritual bankruptcy of capitalism and the Reagan-Clinton era; it’s Tony Montana’s “Is this it?” for white collar types.
The Matrix, Fight Club, Office Space, and American Beauty were all about “the worst thing that can happen to you is to have a steady job” which ended up sounding ridiculous after 2008. It turned out that was actually a fantasy life
I saw it once in theaters and I still recall it vividly. Remember thinking though it was the kind of movie one could sound smart by ridiculing for some of the most ham-fisted Freudian symbolism ever put on screen, it was actually amazing.
Today’s the tenth anniversary of Only God Forgives, here’s a piece I wrote on it last year to tie into the release of Copenhagen Cowboy. One of my favorites that I’ve written
