There is an “election” in Tanzania today, similar to Zimbabwe’s June 2008 re-run when Robert Mugabe contested against himself.
This is how Kenya’s The Standard has correctly captured the farce and embarrassment.
“Opposition members have been edged out of Tanzania’s vote, turning it into a one-horse race. The democratic ideals Mwalimu Julius Nyerere once championed now seem buried under a tightening grip of autocratic control.
As Tanzanians head to the polls today, the air across Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Moshi is thick with uneasy calm—a nation voting under the shadow of fear, silence, and inevitability.”
At least in 2008, Mugabe used violence and did what he did, but he did not remove the main contestant, Morgan Tsvangirai, from the ballot paper. In Tanzania, the president has arrested everyone representing meaningful opposition, thrown them in jail, and then proceeded to contest alone.
That is the state of SADC today, a total embarrassment and a farcical joke.
