This is a huge landmass and it will take 1000+ years before the majority of it is developed, assuming the country survives that long. Technology will be incomprehensibly more advanced by then. Wildlife isn't going anywhere.

I am sure these same conversations were had 100's of years ago when our current cities were being built.

I don't see how its inherently bad for individual states to manage their own protected land. If the country is to continue advancing, we will need to expand infrastructure.
