A car ended up stuck on top of an automatic bollard in Southend city centre!
The driver is believed to have tailgated another vehicle into a restricted section of the High Street, driving over an automatic security bollard as it began to rise from the road.
The hydraulic bollards were installed around Southend High Street as part of a major security upgrade designed to protect pedestrian areas from vehicle attacks.
The anti-terror safety scheme cost around £2 million and created a controlled vehicle access system, allowing authorised vehicles in at certain times while keeping the High Street protected.
An Amazon Prime driver has got their van stuck in the mud in the Thames Estuary after they drove into the sea following a satnav route.
They were trying to reach Foulness Island, near Southend, to make a parcel delivery.
But the driver followed a satnav onto The Broomway which is an ancient tidal path across Maplin Sands with a long and dangerous history.
It regularly disappears under the sea, is covered by fast-moving tides and thick fog. It is not suitable for vehicles.
We published a video of the situation on our Facebook page and Instagram feed.
Security staff working for QinetiQ, which manages Foulness Island for the MOD, said the driver abandoned the van as the tide began coming in.

On 6th January 2026, London City Airport will introduce a drop-off charge.
The charge will be £8.00 for 0-5 minutes then £1 minute for any additional minutes, with a maximum stay of 10 minutes. Blue badge holders will be exempt from the charge.
This move is part of our commitment to encourage more travel to and from the airport via public and sustainable transport modes, of which two-thirds of our passengers already use.
