Sheriffs do not have the legal authority to pick and choose which federal laws they will enforce based on personal or political preference; although, ironically they are not generally required to "assist" federal agencies in enforcing federal regulations---making both local law enforcement and public safety appear paradoxical, perhaps even self-defeating.
