UCAVs/CCAs demonstrate promise but imagination must be tempered by operational analysis. In this short piece for @CalibreDefence, I argue uncrewed systems should presently not be pursued as an immediate substitute for crewed fighters but developed as core combat air enablers.
Very happy to share this article written by @MilAvHistory from @RUSI_org with you.
Christoph takes a look at the role CCAs/UCAVs could play for the Luftwaffe as their capabilities become clearer.

Thanks, Christoph for your time and contribution.
I am not saying that the worst part of the FCAS breakup is the ai-generated slop from professional Linkedin-ers we will see over the next few days…
…but I am also not not saying it.
With news that the 6th Gen Franco-German fighter in FCAS has come to an end, how realistic are Germany’s alternatives? I explored this recently w/ @linus_terhorst at @RUSI_org .

A reminder that the PLAAF is more than the J-16, J-20 & PL-15/17 spear tip. The KJ-2000 force may be small yet the AEW&Cs type force extends to KJ-200/500. PLAAF is training in larger composite formations incl. AEW&Cs and tankers.

Together with @linus_terhorst I take a closer look at the inception of FCAS, the dynamics that appear to underpin the troubled political-industrial relationship, and the strategic alternatives for Germany. Read here on @RUSI_org 👇
'Should the German government be unwilling to force industry into costly compromises with the French, lack of clarity on long-term financing and industrial limitations mean it must pursue another multinational programme', write @MilAvHistory and Dr @linus_terhorst in the latest #RUSICommentary.

'UCAV/CCAs sit in an uncanny valley of costs and aspiration. In the performance triangle of speed, range and payload, upfront costs are unavoidable.' writes Christoph Bergs (@MilAvHistory) in his article for @CalibreDefence.

It continues to impress me how civil defence is taken both seriously in Finland and integrated into every day life (e.g. large bunkers used a hockey fields). Makes it more cost-effective and ensures facilities are maintained.

@roberttollast Indeed. Don’t need to produce a high number of hits every time to hold an area at risk. By challenging permissiveness for land, sea and/or air, it changes the calculus on permissiveness. Not insurmountable but needs to be balanced.
@GuyPlopsky So many issues I wanted to address in that video and ultimately had to cut so it doesn’t become an unfocused frankenstein. Thanks for sharing btw!
No background info if this was an ambush at known heli route or chance event. Window of opportunity is tiny even with proper positioning.
External fuel tank seen mounted on left pylon: likely contributed to the Ka-52 fate. Impressive reaction times + control by FPV operator.
