I don't have any issue with this at all. This is no different than when people write fanfiction to remove or fix things they don't like from some series.

This is just a fan version. This isn't censorship because Made in Abyss is still published and out there without any changes made to it.

People would be up in arms if Ao3 authors could illustrate their stories too! Both versions can exist and people can enjoy both. The person even stated it is not meant as a replacement for the original.

I don’t usually share my thoughts about this, but after recent events today I need to talk about something that has been sitting on my mind for years. In case you haven’t heard: the author of Ganbare!Nakamura-kun!! was so brutally harassed (she even received death threats) that she couldn’t take it anymore and deactivated her social media 😥...

And no, unfortunately this is not the first time something like this has happened. We saw it happen with Horikoshi-sensei (My Hero Academia) too, when part of the fandom decided that the characters and the story had to go in the direction they wanted—leading to death threats, insults, and harassment. And he wasn’t the first either.

Criticism is always legitimate, but a part of the fandom has clearly crossed the line: from “I don't like this” to “this is wrong and you are wrong for doing it, change it or you are a bad person”, turning a valid opinion into harassment.

This is no longer about morals, it’s about control.
I feel like there is a tendency for some people to feel entitled to have everything tailor-made, catered to their personal taste. They appropriate characters and stories that don't belong to them, and expect the author to comply with their demands; if they don’t, they take it as a personal attack.

Creating is not about trying to appeal to everyone, it’s about exposing yourself, your ideas, your feelings . Give so many times full time of you...Seeing someone dedicate years of their life to sharing a story for people to enjoy, only to receive hate and harassment because it doesn't match someone’s expectations, is deeply disheartening.

And no, it's not about not being able to criticize. Analyzing, debating, or pointing out what we find uncomfortable is always healthy. I’m speaking out because this turns into a full-blown lynching. At that point, you are no longer defending values, but using them as an excuse to behave like a bully.

This is one of the reasons I am anti-censorship when it comes to art.

There are people out there who are rabid, unflinching, unchanging, and relentless when it comes to anything that even challenges their perception of the world.

Art should not be policed, censored, or restricted. When that happens, when you acquiesce to people who tell you what art should and should not be, you immediately yield art's powers of provocation, inspiration, and expression.

They will threaten you, doxx you, threaten you, spread rumors about you, stalk you, and do whatever they can to ensure that you follow what their perception of art should be.

I've been watching this discourse of proshippers and antis for years and, I have to say, if you believe that art should be censored, restricted, or policed down to the limited perception of a few select individuals, I am not on your side.

I am, and will always be, on the side of creative freedom and the right to create whatever you want. In that same breath, I completely agree that, if you put something out into the world, then the world has a right to express their opinion on it. So, be ready to stand by your art!

Don't EVER let the flame of freedom and expression in the name of art extinguish 🔥🧡

I will always say that I believe, in an ideal world, art should be free. Of course, things are how they are. Bills, expenses, etc. Not knocking it at all and I love seeing artists thrive because of their artwork and skill. Please commission and support artists of every medium!

However, I say that because I believe art should never be subjected to the whims of others. Nobody should ever get a say as to what your art, your final product, should be. By offering a monetary exchange for the art's experience, people can feel entitled to partial ownership, critique, and even demands of your artwork. This goes for fans, critics, and publishers.

This, right here, is a clear example of that gone too far. Imagine pouring your heart into a story, submitting it, and then being suggested to cut and rewrite it. Not because of continuity issues or plot holes but because it could possibly be mistaken for AI. Maybe. Potentially.

Absolutely ridiculous. Publishers already determine what you can and can not release though them due to a multitude of sensitivities but this is awful.

Publish independently. And don't ever, ever, ever let anyone, including AI, determine what your artwork is.

Needs to be less about how fast you can read and more about actual literary discourse.

Tell me how the themes of the book made you feel, what you thought about the writer's style, describe the immersive experience of that world. Something! Those are the things that get people interested in literature.

Nowadays, all I hear about is whether or not someone can be shipped and hyperbole on how an actual book was. It's either amazing or absolute shit.

Don't rush through a world that was meant to be experienced. Reading is not a speedrun. There is so much magic in savoring literature at your own pace.

I've run into a bad actor in the art community like this before.

First and last time I paid them upfront and in full.

They ghosted me for about two months, all while posting pictures of their vacations and casual sketches, not replying to my inquiries.

I sent a final message saying I was going to do a charge back for the money and, suddenly, they finished the art in a few days, offering a slew of excuses.

Art takes time, and things happen. But if you have been paid, the onus is on you, the creator, to deliver to someone who has given you their hard-earned money.

If you know you can't do it, don't take the money.

@rushicrypto We just have much more access to information year after year. This kinda makes this seem a lot worse because the panic, grief, and anxiety one person feels can spread across the world.

Think of it as growing pains. We always come out the other end alright and you will too.
