@jessesingal In my own personal anecdotal experience most of the conservatives I know well were the most terrified of covid when we first started hearing about it. Things changed dramatically over the next couple months because of outside influences on all sides.
@AnMailleach@tylercowen@JonHaidt Visiting an average American high school class for an hour would likely change his view. He would be annoyed by the half the class that is on their phone most of the time, but most of the other half of the class that he thinks were actually paying attention just had ear buds in.
@NordicNeuralNet @daviddesteno@ATabarrok@tylercowen@JonHaidt Yes, this is going to play out exactly like the dangers of smoking (and second hand smoke) did. A fight for decades when even a modicum of common sense would do. Tech companies have spent billions to induce and enhance addiction and anxiety in their users because it works.
To mark the publication of the 2nd edition of How Learning Happens we are giving away a 5 copies of the book. Simply retweet this to be included in the draw.
@gregisenberg One can hope. The focus at the moment is on the problems it is causing teens and children, but I don't think that adults are all that different in terms of average impact. Personally, I think that the current digital world is incompatible with human flourishing.
@RMVB4Flight @jeffryhouse@JBradshaw01 No surprise that you would post such a response because you have nothing at all to support your assertions - and you know it.
@JamesTG81@KadyMuhammad1@C_Hendrick "If having phones is the norm that novelty value isn’t there."
We are dealing with addiction. Novelty has nothing to do with it.
@gpork@ModestTeacher At first, like everyone else, they probably would have been seduced by the promise of technology. With a bit of time they would have seen what a complete disaster social media and phones are for learning and the learning environment.
@ShawnB86256 @Teachers__Unite Is your office increasing being filled by unqualified and untrained people because the qualified and trained people are quiting in ever larger numbers?
@shanebeckers@munakadri@chastingstwins The kind of silliness believed by urbanites who don't have the foggiest idea how ridiculously more severe the teacher shortage is in small rural boards. You WANT to live where housing is expensive for the benefits that come with that, and you want to be paid more for your wants.
@shanebeckers@munakadri@chastingstwins There is nothing stopping GTA teachers from moving to those rural areas - the same rural areas that have teachers shortages far more severe than in the urban areas. But they won't.
@WhitneyHopYard @jgoldik@Teachers__Unite Such nonsense. Local bargaining wraps up March 28, 2024. Outstanding local issues are then sent to arbitration. Those arbitrations must be completed during 2025 at the latest. Very few will not be settled by fall 2024.
@GeoHughs If parents want something better for their children's education they should pay attention and care about the ballot box, not teachers' contracts.
@rockyflo33 @krushowy@Sflecce@TorontoStar@fordnation At my school every single student has their own device. Makes zero difference. Most students forget them, most of those who manage to bring them don't have them charged. They are on their phones non-stop.
Learning would be far better with no tech in my classroom.
@MsJamieLy @WendyGoodes@pmc8387@MrBMontgomery16 You are the dummy who thinks that unions should continue to negotiate with a Gov that is not going to negotiate. Arb isn't perfect, but it is way better than the alternative. Anyone with any sense understands that.
