Ewing and Benge definitely have great potential. They will be solid pieces if the organization stops micromanaging.

But the fact remains, our problems remain the same. SP at the top is dogshit. Soto has little to no protection.

For as long as leadership (Stearns) remains more worried about proving themselves right, rather than fielding a winning fucking team, these issues will not be addressed.

The key limiting factor right now is - how much unnecessary interference is going on?

1B by committee compared to 1 full time player has been cripplingly bad.

Players out of position has not and will not pay off the way Stearns wants it to. Ever.

Letting analytics dictate how you approach the match ups and lineups down to every single pitch will not work the way the Mets are employing it.

They need to stop over-informing the athletes, filling their heads with clutter, and just have them let it rip sometimes.

It was illustrative. There's dozens of similar examples of players emerging as real MLB talent after years of languishing with the Mets. Is Holderman going to find 1 or 2 years of success then fizzle like Sewald, Montero or Flexen? He sure might. Probably even most likely.

McLean is an SP2 (this year) we need to act like a 1. Holmes is a 4/5 we pretend is a 2 (gives no innings), Scott and Thornton are early enough that the league may yet figure out - we need 15 more starts to really see if they've got it, and Maneae is a 6.

Sure, if we sign Skubal and every pitcher variable breaks our way, the rotation can be good.

With the season they've been having, winning 3 of every 5 remaining games, when they've won 3+ games only 4 times this year, is beyond improbable.

If they pull it off, you shake your head in Mets-fan-esque disgust because yet again, any one or two wins against the dregs of the league means they would have been in control of their destiny much earlier.

So, no, you don't enjoy it or root for mediocrity. That would only embolden continued bad decision making.

As an aside, based on their schedule, they can win 16 straight, to get to .500, and make up little to no ground based on who they play. Their remaining SoS is substantially harder than the Padres, Nationals, Marlins, Diamondbacks, and Cardinals. Even the Cubs, Phillies and Pirates have easier schedules, so them going .500 is easily doable over the next 16.
