If drivers fail this test in Sweden, they will not get a license.

The test is called skid pan training, known as halkbana in Sweden, which is a mandatory slippery-road control exam that drivers must pass to secure a license.

During the exam, drivers must navigate specially treated tracks coated in water or oil to simulate real-world conditions like black ice and heavy snow packs. Instructors purposely force the vehicle into sudden spins or slides, requiring the student to successfully steer out of danger and regain complete control of the car. The training also teaches drivers exactly how speed, vehicle weight, and braking distance change when driving on zero-traction surfaces.

Scandinavian governments mandate this hands-on test because standard road exams on dry asphalt do not prepare drivers for the severe, unpredictable winters of northern Europe. Failing to demonstrate proper vehicle recovery techniques or showing reckless behavior on the track results in an automatic failure.
