What happens when data science intersects with political science?
In the new interdisciplinary course “Persuasion at Scale," undergraduates from across the university will learn a rigorous method for quantitatively assessing the impact of persuasive media on voters' beliefs and behaviors.
Political Science Professor Eunji Kim and Applied Mathematics Professor Chris Wiggins aim to give students the tools to analyze everything from campaigns and advertisements to partisan media and social media.
“Engineering students don't often take classes in political science, and our own social science students do not often take many math classes,” Kim says. “These types of classes are critical for them to learn how to fix the many complex problems facing our society.”

Generative #AI tools are here to stay - but how can we learn to use them responsibly?
This fall, we introduced a new course called AI in Context - a deep dive into the history, development, applications, and societal impacts of AI. The course is co-taught with faculty from Arts & Sciences.
“The genie is out of the bottle, so we need to learn how to accommodate generative AI into our classes and into education more broadly,” says Adam Cannon, a senior lecturer in Computer Science. “If we can educate them about not just the technology but also the societal impacts of the technology, then they will not only be better and more innovative users but also more responsible users.”
