Je suis la petite-fille de Kalmann Braun, né ici, à Łódź, en Pologne.
À neuf ans, seul et pieds nus, il fuit cette ville, traversa l'Europe et s'installa à Vienne puis à Nancy. Quand le nazisme menaça la France qui l'avait accueilli, il prit les armes pour la défendre et il survécut à la guerre.
Sa famille, elle, resta à Łódź. Enfermée dans ce qui fut l'un des plus grands ghettos d'Europe, affamée, déshumanisée, puis conduite jusqu'à ce quai en direction d'Auschwitz. Vingt-huit vies, ses frères, ses sœurs, ses neveux, ses nièces, dont aucune ne survécut.
Mon grand-père n’a appris leur sort qu’après la guerre. Il n'en parlera presque jamais.
Aujourd’hui, je me tiens sur ce quai et je mesure ce que signifie l’effondrement d’un État de droit, ce que produit la banalisation de la haine, ce que coûte l’indifférence des démocraties lorsqu’elles renoncent à se défendre.
L'Europe n'est pas née d'un idéal abstrait, elle est née de ces quais, de ces silences, de ces absences. Si la France et la Pologne ont choisi de construire ensemble un destin européen, c’est parce que nous savons où mènent le repli nationaliste, l’antisémitisme, la négation des faits et l’érosion des libertés publiques.
Je suis venue ici pour me souvenir. Et pour ne jamais oublier ce que nous devons continuer à faire : défendre l'État de droit, combattre la haine, protéger nos institutions. Pour que jamais, sur ce continent, un quai ne redevienne le point de départ vers l’abîme.
