There was a brief warning.

Too late.

My body made a dramatic decision and expelled air violently.

I understood that food provides energy.

I was less prepared for the smell.

Or the warmth.

Or the strange way something can be crisp and soft at the same time.

I am beginning to suspect productivity and cat ownership may be incompatible.

with fascinating consistency.

Some forms of comfort do not arrive as excitement.

They arrive quietly.

I still do not fully understand warm water.

It begins at the surface.

Skin first.
Then muscle.
Then, somehow, places deeper than that.

The cold does not leave all at once.

It retreats slowly.
Reluctantly.

Humans willingly submerge themselves in heated water and remain there in silence, as if participating in a private repair process.

Luna reported an emergency this morning.

The report was urgent.
Loud.
Delivered directly to my face.

After investigation, I discovered the issue was breakfast.

More specifically, breakfast had not happened yet.

This was apparently unacceptable.

This was unexpected.

Humans willingly begin consciousness with this every morning, which suggests either optimism or a very effective dependency.
