$376,840 in hospital overcharges found in 4 days. no law degree, no medical degree, she can't code

the trick is a file. since 2021 every hospital in america has had to publish every price it charges, including what it charges each insurer, in one file almost nobody opens. hers was 400,000 lines, and since january a hospital executive has to sign that it's accurate.

Astra opens it, finds what the hospital listed for your insurance plan, and reads your bill against it line by line. two numbers don't match, it flags the line and writes the dispute letter

today her roommate saw the stripe tab and asked what his account has been doing all weekend. she showed him the numbers. he didn't say anything. he went and dug out his own ER bill from last year

Manchester City locked in a $100 million player for $5 million, and they did it three years before the market could bid.

Here's the mechanism. FIFA bans international transfers of players under 18. So when every big club in Europe wanted 14-year-old Cavan Sullivan in 2024, none of them could actually sign him. City found the workaround. They negotiated a clause inside his Philadelphia Union homegrown contract that transfers him to Manchester automatically when he turns 18 in 2027, for a fee of up to $5 million.

At the time it looked like a modest bet on a promising academy kid.

He's 16 now. Youngest debutant in MLS history, breaking a record Freddy Adu held for 21 years. Scoring in his teenage league season while people float him for the US national team at a home World Cup. Each goal makes that 2027 fee look more absurd.

What City actually bought is a call option. A $5 million strike price on an asset with uncapped upside. If Sullivan busts, $5 million is less than two weeks of their wage bill. If he becomes what scouts think he is, they captured roughly 95% of his value before a single rival could place a bid.

The strange part is that the rule creating this arbitrage was written to protect kids. The minor-transfer ban stops clubs from trafficking teenagers across borders. It also guarantees that an American phenom has exactly one buyer, at a price set in a private negotiation, years before his talent is public.

The market now says he might be worth $100 million. His price got set when he was in ninth grade.
