This week at @MineBanTreaty#22MSP in @UNGeneva, States and civil society are affirming the importance of this landmark disarmament Convention. We’ve heard some important updates on progress in #landmine clearance, but are concerned the pace of clearance is too slow in many affected countries. Read ‘Clearing the Mines 2025’ to see the current status and what’s needed to drive forward #clearance and achieve completion. https://t.co/w34TodP8eV

In 2023, 237.23km² of anti-personnel #landmine areas were cleared globally—a 26% increase from 2022 and the highest ever recorded! 94% of clearance occurred in @MineBanTreaty States Parties. Another huge increase in #Cambodia. States Parties with the greatest annual clearance output—#Afghanistan #Cambodia #Croatia, #Iraq—accounted for around 85% of all mined area cleared globally in 2023. #SiemReapSummit #ClearingTheMines
This week Mine Action Review is at the @MineBanTreaty Fifth Review Conference #SiemReapSummit#Cambodia following progress of #landmine affected States & discussing progress in #clearance. Read Mine Action Review's Statement below on #clearance of #clustermunition remnants, at the 12th Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, taking place at the @UNGeneva this week. #CCM12MSP@ISUCCM 👇
Globally, at least 24 States are affected by #clustermunition remnants, along with two “other areas”/territories. Of the 10 affected @ISUCCM States Parties, only #LaoPRD has massive contamination; Iraq has #heavy contamination; and the other 8 affected States Parties have medium or light contamination. #CCM12MSP
We've started the clearance session at @ISUCCM#CCM12MSP. 'Clearing Cluster Munition Remnants 2024' report found that global clearance of #clustermunition-contaminated area in 2023 totalled 185km2, an increase of more than 8% on the almost 171km2 cleared in 2022 and a new annual record. Lao PDR is seeking a 5-yr extension to its #clustermunition clearance deadline, but because of the massive extent of contamination, will need multiple extensions in order to meet its @ISUCCM Art. 4 clearance obligations. We welcome Lao PDR’s strong national ownership, including concrete and costed plans for both clearance and for survey. #CCM12MSP Read the full statement 👇
Germany is asking for a 5-yr interim extension to its #clustermunition@ISUCCM Art. 4. #clearance deadline, to 1 August 2030. We hope #Germany can complete clearance in this period, but density of other explosive ordnance contamination alongside CMR, together with strict environmental regulations concerning the burning of heath required prior to clearance, may make this impossible. Read our full statement below #CCM12MSP
Chad is asking for a 2yr interim extension to its #clustermunition@ISUCCM#clearance deadline to 1 October 2026, in order to conduct survey in Tibesti province. We hope Chad can secure much needed international assistance for the survey. #CCM12MSP Read our full statement below👇
Three affected @ISUCCM States Parties are requesting extensions to their respective Article 4 #clustermunition#clearance deadlines: #Chad, #Germany, & #LaoPDR. Clearance is essential for removing the threats posed by deadly #clustermunitions, saving lives and limbs, and enabling communities to safely use productive land, free from fear. #CCM12MSP
