As a work-from-homer, I've gotten into the habit of racing out the door in search of some face-to-face interaction as soon as I close my laptop at the end of the day. Recently, however, I've noticed something strange going on at the bars and restaurants I often bring a book to at 5 p.m.: They're packed!
Showing up early used to be a surefire way to get a reservation and beat the crowds. Not anymore.
In my latest for The Wall Street Journal, I wrote about how early birds are winning the post-pandemic entertainment economy—and moving the whole world earlier to suit them.
Restaurants are now seating 10% (!!!) of diners between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., up from 5% in 2019, according to Yelp. More are moving their happy hours and closing their doors earlier as a result.
Even Broadway, in the city that supposedly never sleeps, has moved up curtain times.
Alexander Donnelly, who goes to about 50 Broadway shows a year for his job in theater production, was particularly looking forward to seeing the limited run of “Into the Woods." When he went to the box office a little after 7 p.m. to grab the tickets, however, he was horrified to hear the “take your seats” chimes.
Friends he was meeting were still across town. After some panicked texts back and forth, they decided they couldn’t be the people walking in late to a Broadway show.
“I’ve been to dozens of Friday shows and they all started at 8, so I was shocked,” says Donnelly.
A third of the shows now running on Broadway start in the 7 o’clock hour on Fridays, according to Playbill, which Donnelly says would have been unheard of a few years ago.
“Traditionally people would say that’s a bad idea. Don’t do a show that early, because people won’t have time to get into the city from the suburbs,” Donnelly says. “Now, we’re seeing this desire to get home earlier and get out of the city as quickly as possible.”
