Thabiso Nokulunga Mchunu was a 28-year-old South African woman who was tragically identified as one of nine women found murdered in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng.

On September 25, 2026, the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development, led by MEC Bukiwe Fanta, issued an urgent public appeal to help locate her family. While her body was discovered in Gauteng, government records indicate that her last registered address was on Govan Mbeki Avenue in North End, Gqeberha indicating strong ties to the Eastern Cape.

The provincial government and the @SAPoliceService are seeking her relatives to formally identify her body and receive necessary psychosocial support.

William "King of Bling" Mbatha operated the infamous “Blue Light Gang”. The nickname came from ostentatious display of wealth, designer clothing, and wearing two Rolex watches at the same time.

He grew up in Atteridgeville and dropped out of school prematurely, getting involved in petty crime. He would ultimately operate as a director and stockholder for the Ramsquare Café and Jazz Pub, ran Mbatha Travel, and a fleet of taxis.

Between 2007 and 2009, Mbatha led a sophisticated criminal crew. The gang used police blue lights, cloned law enforcement vehicles, forged police identification cards, and actual police uniforms to execute daylight traffic stops. The gang hijacked their vehicles, handcuffed them, and took them to their homes or secluded areas. Victims were tortured - most notably by having plastic bags placed over their heads - to force them to surrender cash, safes, jewellery and electronics.

He accumulated large wealth through his illicit operations, which he flaunted heavily, cultivating a celebrity-like status. His fleet featured a Lamborghini, a BMW X5, and multiple Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He owned a R2.4 million mansion in Irene (Centurion), a weekend house at Hartbeespoort Dam, and property in Atteridgeville.

Mbatha's downfall came from multiple victims recognising him following a series of high-profile "Blue-Light" robberies:

In 2009, an Alberton businessman was ambushed and robbed. Security cameras captured Mbatha and his crew on CCTV footage during the robbery. Another victim in Meyersdal saw Mbatha's photograph printed in the Sunday newspapers.

On 29 July 2009, police intercepted Mbatha in Fourways, Johannesburg. He was arrested at a luxury car service garage just as he arrived to collect his R2.7-million Lamborghini from a routine service.

He was initially detained for an attempted robbery that took place on 14 July at the Eastgate shopping mall, where he had impersonated a police sergeant. Though he briefly secured bail for that specific incident, he was re-arrested days later inside Boksburg prison once the newspaper-tipoff victim formally tied him to the wider, violent Blue-Light gang operations.

Simultaneously, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) commenced an investigation in 2009, raiding his home and businesses.

Initially, Mbatha faced tax evasion and fraud charges in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court while the police and the SARS were still piecing together his sprawling syndicate. Once the full scale of the "Blue-Light Gang" violent robberies, kidnappings, and syndicates was uncovered, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) consolidated his prosecution. They prioritised the heavy violent crime charges - such as aggravated robbery and kidnapping - in the South Gauteng High Court.

He was formally convicted on 7 March 2012, and subsequently sentenced on 11 April 2012 to cumulative total of 123 years in prison, with an effective sentence of 35 years behind bars after the judge ordered key sentences to run concurrently.

The state used SARS evidence of the chasm between his declared income and his actual wealth as core evidence. In court, it was revealed his front businesses generated over R100,000 per month. However, he underreported or entirely failed to declare these revenues to SARS. 

SARS and the police compiled an inventory of assets valued at over R8 million at the time of his arrest. This included a R2.7 million Lamborghini, two BMWs, two Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and multiple properties. He was unable to provide a legitimate, taxed paper trail to account for the acquisition of these assets.

Instead of proceeding with a lengthy, separate tax trial SARS and the state recovered the tax revenue through the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU). His assets were auctioned to the public, and the proceeds were redirected back to state coffers.

He is currently incarcerated at Kokstad Maximum Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal.
