☢️THE WIDOWMAKER Porsche 930 Turbo a car that almost ruined Porsche! It was 1975, and Porsche had been extremely successful in their motorsport racing ventures. After the end of the Can-am race series, there was a gap left in Porsches' racing heart. And so, they began their journey to enter into group 4 touring car racing. What they needed was a car to compete, but whatever it was, it needed to be homologated.
This meant that essentially, it needed to be a production car that had been modified. And as quickly as that the 911 Turbo was born. It was already the perfect sports car and had the ideal platform to work with. Porsche had been using turbo technology for their Can-Am legend the 917 Turbopanzer, and now aimed to achieve the same level of dominance with the 911 Turbo.
Porsche pulled the engine from the 3.0 Carrera RS and slapped a huge turbo on it. This was accompanied by a widening of the rear track and the introduction of the classic duckbill rear wing, it was the most they could do to stabilize it. It got stiffer suspension, bigger brakes, and even a robust 4-speed transmission.
In 1975, it was like nothing that had ever been produced. Muscle cars were losing steam and Japan wasn't even in the picture at the time, and here was this German powerhouse with enough rear-end power to strike fear into even the fiercest of drivers.☢️

☢️Even back then, Porsche was a brand owned by anyone and everyone who could afford it. Dentists, lawyers, and celebrities. The difference is, these people were not being helped by any driver assists in the 930 Turbo. As it was the top-of-the-line 911, those who could afford it, bought it. An act that many would come to regret.
It was too fast. Rear-engined, lightweight, and overpowered. The slow-spooling turbo would kick in around 3,000-4,000 rpm, and at this point, you needed to hold on for dear life. Those skilled enough could settle the oversteer with extra power, but remember, this wasn't a race car. Regular people with no driving experience could buy it, and they were also crashing them.
One crash almost cost Porsche its business. After a husband had left his wife the keys to his 930, she, unfortunately, crashed into oncoming traffic, sadly killing her passenger. This led to a lawsuit that saw Porsche pay $2.5 million in damages. The body count kept piling up. Porsche had to acknowledge that selling a product this fast to regular people was no longer safe.
If this carried on, Porsche could’ve seen their capital dwindle after court case payouts. Luckily this didn't happen. Nowadays, Porsche provides high-speed driving lessons to those ordering one of their sportiest models. This is a direct repercussion of the 930 Turbo widowmakers' legacy.☢️
