Influencer Raises Over R30k for Learner Who Couldn’t Afford School Pie Day
Influencer Mandisa Tshingana has helped raise more than R30,000 for a learner from Thembalethu Primary School in the Western Cape after it emerged that he allegedly couldn’t afford the R40 required for pie day, sparking outrage online.
A classroom video shows several learners eating pies and drinking juice while the boy, who did not pay, sits quietly and hides his face as the teacher records the moment.
The clip quickly went viral, with many criticising the teacher for filming instead of helping the learner.
Following the backlash, Tshingana appealed to the public to donate in support of the learner and his family. The campaign gained strong traction on social media, and donations have since surpassed R30,000.
Many South Africans have praised the initiative, saying the funds will help ensure the learner’s basic needs are met and restore his dignity after the incident.
