Indigenous People of Manipur Celebrate ‘World Indigenous Day’ in Delhi

In a vibrant and culturally enriching event, the Indigenous tribes and communities of Manipur
residing in the Delhi NCR region came together to celebrate World Indigenous Peoples Day 2025
at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Organized by the Working Group of the World Indigenous Day Celebration, Delhi, the gathering
served as a platform for participants to showcase their rich heritage, cultural traditions, and
shared historical legacies. The celebration featured traditional attire displays, music and dance
performances, and the exchange of stories about ancestral roots and cultural practices.

Beyond the festivities, the event carried a deeper message of unity, mutual respect, understanding, and need for solidarity among the Indigenous tribes of Manipur—particularly in light of the ongoing Manipur crisis and challenges faced by Indigenous communities.

A highlight of the event was a traditional attire show, where male and female participants dressed
in their finest traditional wear showcased their cultural pride.
Despite an estimated one lakh Indigenous people living in the NCR region, there is currently no
common platform or organization representing them. This marks the second year that the group
has celebrated World Indigenous Day in Delhi.

Organizations and Indigenous Tribe/communities that participated in the event: Aimol Tribe Union, Delhi Manipuri Society (DeMaS), Kom Union, Manipur; Mao Union, Imphal; Manipur Innovative Youth Organisation, Delhi (MAIYOND); Manipur Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD); Meitei Heritage Society; Ningols United Progressive Initiative (NUPI); Team Meitei Personalities (TMP); United Kakching Students (UNIKAS); Zeliangrong Students Union Delhi (ZSUD); and members from the Aimol, Anal, Inpui, Kom, Liangmei, Mao, Meitei, Rongmei and Zeme.
