RBNZ had around 200 employees during the two decades in which it became recognised as the world’s best central bank under Dr Don Brash. It held its numbers and reputation through the leadership period of Dr Alan Bollard.
In Dr Brash’s time they carried the policy and implementation work of cutting inflation from grotesque levels under the world/leading contractual targeted rate-band. They pioneered a prudential supervision regime without the moral hazard of state default guarantees.
Nothing shows the incompetence and loss of courage and leadership capacity among NZ politicians better than their allowing our RBNZ’s collapse into the bloated and feeble Tane Mahuta.
Both Brash and Bollard are still with us and in full vigour. So are Ruth Richardson and Roger Douglas, the political giants who led the world in straightforward reform.
It is revealing that the midgets now holding power (it can’t be called leading) in public affairs (media/politics) have either not thought of recalling some of our giants to drain the swamp, or they’re too scared of what it would entail.
