Look, as someone who dealt with mental health issues pretty severely in 2016/2017, I do not agree with how so many people seem to be seeing this #Lanterns scene. Martin is not telling Hal to give up on life. What father would tell their kid it’s fine to commit suicide???
He’s telling him to let go of the ball and the need to do it solo because carrying the weight of that is what’s exhausting. Not life itself. Anyone who has mental health issues will tell you about the exhausting weight of having it and the need to carry it solo. And yes, carrying that weight solo leads us to believe that the world would be better off without us.
Martin wouldn’t give the key to his son, tell him there’s a lockbox and to keep it from his Mom if he was saying it was cool to commit suicide.
He is a father imparting one last life lesson to his son. Just like any good father does. You want them to live a better life than you did or learn the lessons from the life experiences you had. Martin’s father didn’t even have this talk with him or leave him any lesson. Martin is at least leaving Hal a lesson to let go of the need to do it all yourself. Seeing Noah thank his linemen and want them at his ceremony is a great counter balance to Hal refusing to give up the ball and getting beat up by his teammates. Then again if Noah is part Manhunter and killed Hal, we’ll have to revisit this point. 😏
Young Hal goes to get the ball after the funeral because he is choosing to confront this pain and to carry the weight his way. It’s an incredible moment of self reliance and independence basically saying “I appreciate the lesson, Dad, but I’m gonna do it my way.” The weight did eventually get to him and it changed him as it can do, but he lasted longer than his father and grandfather and he was making amends to the Rushville citizens before he was killed or died (if he is really dead). That speaks to him breaking the generational trauma of the Jordan Boys’ Legacy.
And yes, that’s why he holds onto the ring so hard until John can fully prove himself. He believes in John, but until he stops being caught up in his own trauma from HIS Dad, he’ll just be another Danny Bochner that Hal, or the Halogram, doesn’t trust to finish out the game. I think we’re getting closer to Stewart coming to terms with all of it tho and finally getting the ball from Hal…and that ring.
Glorious
Btw "attack on titan" is such a mistranslation as shinjeki no kyojin just means "Attack titan"
But having it as attack on titan saved ppl from that spoiler ig
