📌Why is the Prambanan Temple Special? • It is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. • The site originally housed 240 temples dedicated to the Hindu Trimurti: Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. • It is renowned for its classical Hindu architecture and detailed stone carvings depicting the Indonesian version of the Ramayana epic. • The central Shiva temple dominates the layout, standing at a height of 47 meters. 📌Its Location • The complex is located on the island of Java in Indonesia. • It is situated in Central Java, near the city of Yogyakarta. History • The temple was constructed in the 9th century CE by the Sanjaya Dynasty of the Mataram Kingdom. • The building initiative was led by King Rakai Pikatan. • The construction marked the resurgence of the Hindu Sanjaya dynasty in Java, serving as a political and cultural counter to nearby Buddhist monuments. 📌Damages from Earthquakes and Volcanoes • The structures have sustained severe destruction over centuries due to recurrent volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and political upheavals. • The devastating Java earthquake in 2006 caused massive structural damage to the site. • While restoration efforts have been ongoing since 1918, many of the smaller structures still require urgent conservation and rebuilding. 📌Shared History • The temple stands as a symbol of a cultural and civilizational partnership between India and Indonesia that spans over 1,000 years. • India and Indonesia recently launched a joint preservation project for the complex. • Under this initiative, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is collaborating closely with Indonesian authorities to restore several smaller temples within the complex. 📌Significance • It provides concrete historical evidence of the peaceful spread of Indian culture, religion, and art to Southeast Asia via ancient maritime trade routes. • The joint restoration project is a major cultural diplomacy tool under India's Act East Policy. • The initiative strengthens bilateral people-to-people ties and projects India's soft power and technical expertise in global archaeological conservation.
