JHS ProStart students this week got to learn and create culinary dishes with Chef Anthony Nace, the Executive Chef at Hilton Downtown Des Moines and winner of the 2023 Iowa Restaurant Association Culinary Competition. Chef Anthony took the time to remake his winning dish with the ProStart Students! Students got to make and eat Seared Beef Strip Loin with Roasted Golden Beets, Purple Street Potatoes, Sauteed Brussels Sprouts, Agave Pumpkin Butter, Aged Cheddar Cheese, and Micro Cilantro. Students enjoyed cooking and plating their own food while being mentored by a professional, well renowned chef!s

Johnston ProStart students Corey Suckow, Davis Cope and Jasmine Newman served guests at the Inaugural Legislative Reception on Tuesday at Centro Restaurant in Des Moines. Students got the unique opportunity to learn a little about the legislative process, what’s important to Iowa’s hospitality industry in this arena, and the chance to meet some elected officials while working at this event. The reception was "A Taste of Iowa" with food prepared by Centro’s culinary team, featuring some unique Iowa items: pork tenderloin sliders, scotcheroos, sour cream raisin pie and Steak De Burgo, to name a few. Students enjoyed the opportunity!

As the new school year gets underway, Johnston is celebrating some success. Student attendance increased between 1 and 5 percentage points last school year at all eight of the district’s school buildings. The increase represents about 90 students at JHS alone. Contributing to the boost is a new rule at JHS that requires attendance at all classes for students to participate in @JCSD__Athletics and activities that day. https://t.co/Ik5dDKgO40

I was blessed with a Dad who could always see the difference I was making as a teacher even in hard times. That difference shined through when my ProStart students drove over an hour to attend his services and helped set up the luncheon. I miss you Dad! 💔

JHS ProStart students Trey Sedlar, McKenna Crowder and Piper Standsbury received their National Certificate of Achievement this week for passing and completing the exam and the program! ProStart is new to JHS so these are the first students in JHS history to receive this award.
