@NatDanielsACAC Just ask! :) I think if you say that you want to make sure you are pronouncing it right, they will appreciate the effort! It's more than some people would do.
@NatDanielsACAC I'm sure I can find ways, but I don't feel like it's the same as being a school counselor. When you're a school counselor, all the kids in your school are your responsibility. You can advocate for social justice and systemic change on a much larger scale.
Thank you all for participating in tonight’s chat and in School Counselor Summer Book Club this summer! I enjoyed sharing ideas with all of you. Until next year! #scsummerbookclub
@counselorgoff Again (assuming I had a school counseling job), I would totally advocate to have him come speak at my school district! #scsummerbookclub
@ChildsMLynne You're right. I don't see it as aggressive, I see it as they want to be heard, but I know not everyone will see it the same way. Acho also said that white people should not paraphrase what a POC has said. Just listen and let them say their piece. #scsummerbookclub
A7) Empathy is the first thing that comes to mind. Compassion, accepting difference, celebrating diversity, looking for similarities. The reason I don't just say look for similarities is because we have to be okay with talking about race. #scsummerbookclub
Q7) As school counselors, we have the ability to educate our students on these topics. What do you think is the most important thing for us to be discussing with our students? #scsummerbookclub
@counselorgoff Me too! I really enjoyed this book. He offers a lot of other great books to read and I will definitely be adding them to my list, but I think he teased at writing another book. If he does, he has me hooked already. #scsummerbookclub I wonder if he does speaking events?
@ChildsMLynne Oh I love that idea for a lunch bunch! That is so awesome! I think there is a book for kids. It might be called "Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Boy." I would love to add that to my library to use with kids. #scsummerbookclub
If I was hired as a school counselor, I would love to host a book club for staff reading this book. I would like to read more and engaged in more professional development. I want to make sure I'm DOING everything I can to support my students. #scsummerbookclub
A6) I have already been talking about Acho's book with my mom and brother. I recommended it to my brother since he's a HS social studies teacher. Having discussions is step 1. I am also planning to have the book with me in my office. #scsummerbookclub
@counselorgoff She could have said that she is just facilitating the discussion and reading questions that Emmanuel had received and she is here supporting her friend. #scsummerbookclub
A5) When Acho talked about his white friend bailing about going on air with him, I felt hurt. I feel like if you make a promise to do something, you have to show up and support your friends. To me, supporting others and taking action are parts of being an ally. #scsummerbookclub
@counselorgoff I'm not trying to judge her, but I just feel like if she was worried that she was the white person asking all of these questions and she thought she was going to come off as a "Karen" she could have made a statement at the beginning. #scsummerbookclub.
