Ashley Biden, daughter of President Joe Biden, left behind a personal diary (along with other belongings like tax records and clothing) at a Delray Beach, Florida, sober living halfway house called The Retreat in mid-2020 while undergoing addiction treatment. House manager Elizabeth Fago discovered the items and passed them to Aimee Harris, a cleaner at the facility who knew Ashley from prior interactions. Harris photographed the diary and, with accomplice Robert Kurlander, attempted to sell it for political gain.

In September 2020, they offered it to Project Veritas (a conservative media group) for $40,000. Project Veritas received the physical diary, conducted some verification (including a handwriting analysis), but ultimately declined to publish due to legal risks and opted to return it. A Project Veritas insider then leaked digital scans to National File, which published key excerpts on October 24, 2020—just weeks before the presidential election.

The FBI (under the Biden Administration's DOJ) launched a theft investigation shortly after. In November 2021, they raided Project Veritas founder James O'Keefe's home, seizing his phone and other items, and conducted searches on associates. No charges were filed against Project Veritas, but the probe confirmed the diary's path. On August 25, 2022, Harris and Kurlander pleaded guilty in federal court (Southern District of New York) to conspiracy to transport stolen property across state lines, explicitly admitting they stole Ashley Biden's diary and sold it interstate. Harris was sentenced to one month in prison in April 2024.
During Harris's sentencing, Ashley Biden herself confirmed the diary was hers in a letter to the judge, stating its online publication had caused her "ongoing significant and irreparable emotional distress." This letter, unsealed and reported by The New York Times, provided definitive authentication.
