The Secretary of State encountered a factory girl on Londonderry's Peace Bridge during his first visit to the city.

Retired shirt factory worker Margaret McMonagle told Chris Bryant she was unhappy with a £187,000 statue erected in honor of industry workers.

Factories staffed mostly by women once made Derry a powerhouse in the global textile industry.

The exchange between the pair remained good-natured and lighthearted.

Derry City and Strabane District Council said they "engaged extensively" with the public and representatives about the sculpture.

They said it’s disappointing that some within the factory girls group felt excluded from the "very open and transparent exercise" and they are "always happy to meet" with them to discuss any concerns.
