Studio view of "Greenhouse" to be worn by Lynn Pina @lynnpina and "Champ" to be worn by Chandra Hampton @champlifestyle ~ both of these women and their stories inspired me to make these pieces for them to wear on July 27!

Kevlar wings, which are part of "Phoenix", to be worn by Grace Chan @gracephies
I made these using strips of Kevlar by knotting, weaving, and stitching them into sculpted chicken wire with thread and rope. #kindredqueens#fashion#girlsincdc#womenartist#art#artist#design
Studio view: creating "Queenmother", a corset bodice with hand-painted Kevlar, leather, silk, and beaded detail, to be worn by Carmen Duarte on July 27, 2022, at Miss Lou: Exhibition One called Soulskins: Fit for Kindred Queens. #kindredqueens#womenartists#fashion#girlsincdc
I'm an artist and an athlete. Never thought I'd be the latter, until a few years ago, at age 34, when I touched a barbell for the first time and promptly fell in love. Such a shock to all!
#kindredqueens#12women#bulletproof
The pieces in the #KindredQueens collection were all hand-stitched to honor the needlework tradition that runs through my maternal female ancestry. I didn't use any patterns or a sewing machine. I wanted to make this collection with my own two hands, using just needle and thread.
I torque, tie, stretch, and stitch my materials with the force of emotional experience. I am obsessed with hard and soft contrast. For a form to be more than one thing at once: that complexity is what I am after. #kindredqueens#12women#bulleproof#wearableart#girlsincdc
