Europe remains an occupied continent 80 years after the end of World War II, occupied mentally and occupied physically by the United States. The US is not protecting Europe. The US is confusing Europe.

The US is causing Europe to abase itself, to break all the normal relations that Europe should have with the rest of the world, to be completely confused about what's right and wrong.

Just speaking as an economist, absolutely the most natural economic connection you can imagine is Russia and Europe.

These are two complementary economies.

When you study international trade, you learn a theory that was developed by a great Swedish economist more than 100 years ago, Heckscher-Ohlin, about what makes trade.

And one thing that makes trade is different factor proportions.

If one place is relatively land-scarce and people-rich, and another place is land-rich and relatively people-scarce, they will trade very productively.

And that's one of the mistakes that Europe has made that is fundamental.

It broke the most natural trade relation with Russia.

And it's determined every day to make sure it's a permanent suicidal break, which is incredible, because it seems there are no economists here in Brussels to say some basic truth.

What are you doing?

This is crazy.

It absolutely is completely wrongheaded.

But Europe is, because of the confusions caused mainly by the United States, as I'll emphasize, Europe is making mistakes vis-a-vis China.

It's making mistakes vis-a-vis Russia.

It is making profound mistakes in the Middle East, where this war of aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran, when Iran was doing nothing but trying to negotiate for the last 15 years, begging to negotiate, signing agreements, coming back to negotiate, only to be killed by the Israelis and the Americans when they sat down to negotiate.

And I mean that literally, not figuratively.

On many occasions, Europe can't even tell what side is the right side.

President Costa today, I just saw, tweeted that Iran must negotiate.

Excuse me.

The United States and Israel launched this war, a pure, sheer, illegal, vulgar, disgusting, failed, violent war of aggression, period.

It's simple.

It's not even complicated.

And yet, Europe can't find the words to say the truth.

Geopolitics as Muscle Memory

Fuhrer Herr Merz is adamant - Ivan must be taught a lesson! Persistence is a truly admirable quality of the Germans. They can’t give up. Though you would think history might have taught them this isn’t always the best option, but apparently not.

You see, for most, geopolitics seems to be just muscle memory. Every German politician has a little man inside whispering “MUST MARCH EAST.” We can debate whether this little man inside has a funny moustache... In any case, it’s a compulsion - a historical hangover from a century of Ost Plans, trying and failing to turn Eastern Europe into a playground for Prussian boots and industrial might. These days, sometimes they mask it in diplomacy and call it “economic influence” or “combating authoritarianism” but deep down, the instinct is there. History may repeat itself as tragedy or farce, but for Germany, it’s both at once.

The British, of course, have their own little geopolitical gremlin, tirelessly hissing “MUST MEDDLE!” Divide and rule is as natural to them as tea at four o’clock. Their politicians can barely glance at a map without wondering where to stir the pot next. Baltics? Check. The Middle East? Double check. Asia? The Great Game is back on! The empire might have died 70 years ago in Suez, and their military is, well, let’s just say, an anachronism. But poisoning international relations, pitting neighbour against neighbour, and generally being toxic on the world stage? Still top notch.

The French, bless them, have a different problem. Their muscle memory for empire - “CONQUER EUROPE!” - is now so atrophied that all that remains is a reflexive arrogance, deployed with no particular aim. Gone are the Napoleonic dreams; all that’s left is an irresistible urge to be annoyingly French. Whether it’s snubbing allies, lecturing on culinary superiority, or inserting themselves into conflicts they don’t understand, the French are the geopolitical equivalent of a has-been diva demanding attention at the party.

For Americans, the Monroe Doctrine has gone global, like a franchise that just won’t stop expanding. “The Western Hemisphere is ours!” has turned into “The whole planet is ours!” They’ve swapped Manifest Destiny for the military-industrial complex, but the mantra is the same: project power, secure markets, and bomb first, ask questions later. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a McDonald’s after they’re done “liberating” you.

For pure single mindedness and consistent behaviour the Poles top them all - victimhood and making the worst choice possible is hardwired into their DNA. Before a fork in the road, with one sign post saying “Possible short term gain but doom thereafter” and another saying “Uncomfortable choice but long term salvation”, we absolutely know which the Poles will choose. EVERY SINGLE TIME. And then it will be everyone else’s fault except their own.

And the Russians? Their muscle memory is simple and unchanging: “MUST DEFEND!” From the Mongols to NATO, their history is a long parade of invasions - from east, west and anywhere in between. Every policy decision is filtered through this lens. They defend by contracting, then expanding, burning, then building - all with generational patience. And an endless expanse plus buffer zones are always a better defense than any river or mountain range.

This, then, is our grand theatre of geopolitics: a cast of nations performing the same roles they’ve been rehearsing for centuries, each bound by its own script. The Germans march east, the British meddle, the French preen, the Americans expand, the Poles whine, and the Russians dig in. The stage may change, but the plot never does. History, it seems, is not just written by the victors - it’s choreographed by their ghosts.
