These two so called academics don’t live with illegal migrants in their communities. They’ve probably never even been to townships or informal settlements, yet they have a lot to say about the lived experiences of poor people and Wits is allowing this to happen.

The issue is not whether economic hardship exists, but whether people are allowed to raise concerns based on what they experience in their own communities.

Academic research has value, but it often sits far removed from the realities in many townships and informal settlements where service pressure, overcrowding, informal competition for resources and weak enforcement are daily lived realities.

Calling every concern “scapegoating” shuts down discussion instead of engaging it. People are not only reacting to theory, they are reacting to what they see and deal with on the ground.

Evidence based policy is important, but so is listening to lived experience without dismissing it as ignorance.

Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says the government will no longer tolerate the spread of fake news.

Do we have a massive crisis with illegal immigrants? Yes

Is the government responsible for the failures of public services? Yes

Does a large influx of immigrants cause more strain to already failing systems? Yes

Does SA have a crime problem? Yes

Do illegal foreigners with no means of economic survival resort to criminal activities that harm South Africans? Yes

Do we have high levels of unemployment? Yes

Do immigrants take South African jobs by offering their cheap labour? Yes

Is the Department of Home Affairs corrupt? Yes

Will illegal immigrants still find ways to sneak in the country? Yes

South Africans hold their government accountable by making their votes count. This is how we’re going about fixing our country. If you’re bringing more problems to our plate that our government refuses to solve, we have to resort to solving those issues ourselves and that’s what you’re seeing now 🤷🏾‍♂️

Always remember that South Africa is the way it is because we fought for it, revolution is the backbone of this country. When our people are not happy, the government won’t stop them from making sure their voices are heard.
