But we must know what is happening. Because ignorance is not always bliss.

Before we even do that, please consider the following.

(1) Our politicians are second highest paid globally - when you consider the size of our GDP. They earn more than lawmakers in Canada, Australia, United States, Germany, Switzerland - all of them.

Your MP makes about 93 times what the average Kenyan makes.

That MP or senior government official can then afford to send his kids to Bradburn. Rusinga School. Etc. And then can take a few selfies and videos for you, post them on Instagram, to mock you.

This is what of our generosity gets us.

(2) These same people are responsible to determining how much our country will spend on PUBLIC Schools. How many of our MPs and Senior Govt officials have their kids in a public school?

Bursaries in this country, are supposed to serve the most vulnerable Kenyans. To give kids a semblance of promising future. A tiny measure of hope.

But apparently we are unable to administer bursaries without putting the funds in hands of thieves.

My journey into importing An EV .

The globe 🌍 is finally shifting from ICE (internal combustion engines to EV aka gari za stima but this migration in kenya is been hampered by GOK 65.5% tarrif 👉🏾 Taxes for electric motor vehicle-
Import duty-35%
Excise duty-10%
VAT-16%

Gari za stima are coming with a lot of benefits when you weigh the Pros and cons the pros of the EV wins .

Currently in China there is a price war on EV everyday the prices keep going down the big brother is not happy and have imposed crazy traffic on China EV imports .
Prices in China start from as low of USD 8,000 up to $35,000 high grade designs for brand new cars zero Mileage.

Silently and under the water the Kenya Goverment via kra have IMPOSED tariff of 65.5% heaped ontop of the purchase price .

But the issue today is not even the 65.5% tarrif nope 👎 it’s the lack of official crsp for brand new vehicles and disowning the official invoices when an importer provides one 🧾 especially for shoppers buying this cars on alibaba app !

Here is my scenario in my quest to go green including the energy at home ,factory and offices I moved to solar energy and now am shifting my personal mobility to electric vehicles which come with alot of benefits that include never to be at any gas station ⛽️ to fuel, near zero percent garage visit or oil change etc etc .

So i first wanted to buy from the local dealers of BYD , SKYWORTH, HAVAL , MIG, Jetour this are purely Chinese brands I know were are used to Toyota’s / Mercedes brand names right ?
Well the local dealer prices had crazy Margins compared to the actual prices in China via a simple search on alibaba app .

So in my case I went to Alibaba searched for the unit I wanted a cross over suv found the right price of USD 19,000 top spects of single motor with an 86 KWh Lithium phosphate ion battery good range of close to 600km on a single charge , so after settling on this unit I paid via alibaba secure pay to avoid been scammed (Alibaba's escrow payment system, powered by Trade Assurance, protects buyers by holding their payment until they confirm they've received the correct order. This means the money is not directly transferred to the seller upon payment. Instead, it's held by Alibaba until the buyer is satisfied with the shipment and confirms receipt.

You see shipping a brand new EV from China has now become way cheaper than buying an 8 year SUV from lets say Japan.

Chinese have RORO shipping moving EVS out of China like crazy cost about 1700$ for a 5 meters suv transit time like 30 days to port of mombasa .

After the unit arrived port of mombasa within 3 weeks this is how frustrations started .

My clearing agent did the entry based on the USD 19,000 value and computing the taxes as follow :
Taxes for electric motor vehicle-
Import duty-35%= 903,826
Excise duty-10%= 348,619
VAT-16%. = 613,569
IDF -2.5%. = 64,559
Railway levy -2%= 51,648
Total 65.5% = SH 1,987,233

I paid the duty then I added the following other costs since electric cars don’t have PVOC you incurr the following

1.veryfication 15000
2.Kebs Kes 129,800
https://t.co/FU2gdFBYf5 inspection payable 6,000
4.Shipping 12,000.
5.CFS 42,000
6.Radiation 1,000/-

Total Sh 205,500/- add duty 1,987,233 cif cost for the unit 2,691,000

So total landed cost is Sh 4,883,733 let’s say 4,9m .

Frustration started when the custom officer at Mombasa forcefully decided to disown the actual purchase price and imposed their own which added another 1.9m 🙌🏿🥲 not sure if local dealers influence this prices 😂

Finally the total landed cost for the unit costed me Sh 6.8m I had to pay to avoid it been auctioned !!

Well after paying that huge amount am
Happy to announce it’s been 1 month now and I have saved the Sh 70,000 fuel that I use to pay for my ML 350 per month !

That’s my experience 😁
