This week marks 8 years since Premier @fordnation was first elected. It's a natural time to wonder, what is his legacy to date?
The Premier's legacy is not transit or COVID-19 stewardship, it's the rise of provincial influence within the federation. (link to the Substack 👇👇).
A few years ago, Ontario tried to drive a national debate on pension reform via the ORPP. It was dismissed immediately by the PM. Even the incoming Liberal PM choose an alternative.
Hard to see that happening to Ford. The rise of provincial influence can be his enduring legacy.
Wrote about provincial tools to fight against Chinese EV's undercutting domestic auto a few weeks back (link in comments). Will be watching how Manitoba's exclusion of Chinese EV's plays out and if they - or other provinces - flex the rest of their policy muscle here.
Great discussion today with @DanTisch from @OntarioCofC, Jackie Pichette from @RBC & @MitchWDavidson on how Ontario’s universities can continue to work with business & industry to help drive productivity, talent & growth in a changing economy. #ONpse

🧵The NDP is out calling for A/C in schools again. Their solution amounts to little more than cancel school when it's hot out. This week, at The Policy Shop on Substack (link at end of thread), I look at how to tackle chronic school repair issues - like A/C - with real solutions.
The good news is the Minister of Education gets this. He's put forward recent efforts to direct dollars from administration and box checking exercises back to the classroom and asked Boards in supervisory positions to study things just like this. This good work should continue.
You've seen the online gambling ads and even seen some legislators attempt to ban them. But we shouldn't ban ads because some people find them annoying.
This week at The Policy Shop I attempt a more nuanced policy conversation on the topic. What's the right balance? (link 👇)
I get why some are trying to react with blanket bans, but there is a more nuanced path that strikes the right balance and continues to ensure the benefits of regulation are delivered. There's no such thing as a win-win in gambling, but their might just be in gambling regulation.
