I earned $120K a year working for Shell in 2012.

Ten years and multiple promotions later, in 2022, that figure has doubled to $240K a year.

In 2023, I stumbled on an internal, confidential, document that showed the salaries of my superiors.

I saw that even if I were promoted multiple times again, the best I could hope for in another 10 years was another doubling to around $480K a year.

This may sound crazy saying it out loud but that wasn’t cutting it for me.

I simply didn’t want the next 10 years to be a repeat of the last 10.

I wanted geometric progression, not an arithmetic one.

On my 40th birthday, in 2023, I was asked to make a wish as a blew the candles on my birthday cake.

“Get the hell out of Shell,” I quietly whispered. Months later, I was out.

In 2024, my businesses grossed $500K; in 2025, they did $1M - geometric progression.

It required me to be delusional about my abilities, to bank on the faithfulness of God and to trust that inner voice that always nag at me that I could be more, I could do more and I could have more.

Let me tell you about naked mole rats. This live underground throughout their lives. They eat root, tubers and bulbs underground without leaving their burrow. When they come across a tuber that's big, they don't try to finish it at once.

They practice a form of sustainable harvesting.They bore into the tuber and eat little out of the softer interior flesh. They deliberately leave the thin outer epidermis (skin) mostly intact. This keeps the plant alive and healthy, allowing it to continue growing or regenerate new tissue. They'll dig around their tunnels to look for other roots and do this. In a few days, they'll go back to the big tuber, which would have regenerated to eat a little again. They're smart not to overwork the tuber or kill it. They farm and bill with sense.

My first ever music video in Nigeria. Plenty Nonsense by Trybesmen. There’s a line in the song, “I was a brilliant boy, I top class in Primary…”, so I called my old primary school, Sunnyfields in Surulere Lagos, that I wanted to shoot a music video in my old classroom, and have Eldee do that rap sitting in my exact old seat! The headteacher at the time, who is the daughter of my headteacher said yes sure.

I promised the kids in the class that I would put all their faces on television and they would be famous. Lol. Only a few faces made the music video, but I just found this old video and I’m fulfilling my promise now, albeit over 20 years later. I wonder where these “kids” are now? Tag yourself if you recognise yourself or anyone you know. It would actually be great to see some of these children now.
