Cutting essential services like fuel imports or healthcare isn’t comparable to reducing inefficiencies in the system. Fuel imports are a major expense, but they are indirectly recovered through taxes, duties, utility pricing, and broader economic activity. The focus should be on improving efficiency, reducing waste, and ensuring that healthcare and subsidies are well-targeted (for people who need them most, rather than distributing benefits broadly to everyone regardless of need) and well-managed through appropriate cost controls.

Similarly, reducing unnecessary political appointments is not about harming families, but about ensuring public sector roles are filled based on need, merit, and efficiency. While any job loss can affect individuals, maintaining an oversized or inefficient public payroll places a long-term burden on the wider population and can strain state resources if not aligned with productivity and fiscal capacity.

Implementing proper cost-cutting measures, reducing waste, and improving efficiency can make a meaningful fiscal difference and help address budget deficits.

In my experience, many institutions end up treating Maldivian names as a mononym rather than assigning them to first, middle, and surname fields, since passports and official documents (like birth certificates and ID cards) show the name as a mononym. As a result, everything often gets squeezed into the surname field instead of being recorded correctly, which can be frustrating.

A simple way to help would be for Maldivian authorities to provide clear guidance on how names should be structured, reflect this in passports or other identification documents, and issue official confirmation that individuals can present to any institution.
