The moral relativism we’re swimming in is really shocking to watch. Integralists have talked about the “Green” stage of consciousness and its postmodern-poststructuralist roots for years as incapable of sustaining a society for exactly this reason; it just totally shatters the ability of society to make durable judgments.

I admit that even as an expert in this field I’m just not ready for the moment when America accepts one of our oligarchs conspiring with an enemy at war (Putin) to blind an ally (Taiwan) as a favor to our primary global opponent (China).

I just don’t know how we can ever be ready for a world in which nothing matters because prior rules & conventions have given way to relativist anarchy—which, practically-speaking, always simply just becomes one rule: More Power Wins.

By the time the average American realizes they voted to install fascism in the US in 2024, it will be too late.

Stop picturing gas chambers.

Start picturing a President and his party encouraging and normalizing right-wing paramilitary bands throughout the country beating, terrorizing and murdering democrats, judges, reporters, non-party politicians and others where they live.

It’s not hard to imagine, just turn on the TV and listen to a Republican rally; the violence, the normalizing of extremism, the excuse making… it’s all there.

And if that day comes, America as we know it will be gone.

Yes, we are that close. There is no threshold we get to magically stop before crossing: this election is it. This is the threshold.

In every important way, the moment a nation votes in a leader who has run on suspending the rule of law, of terrorizing his political enemies, and of ruling as an authoritarian, the nation has already descended into fascism.

If you’re not afraid yet, you should be. You should be absolutely terrified. None of has any conception of the depths of hell this nation can descend to when its full force is unleashed by an immoral autocrat.

That part of your brain saying that I’m being alarmist, that this is just fear-mongering, well, it’s also screaming at you to laugh uncomfortably and reject this idea. It’s screaming at you to keep your model of the world intact, to scroll right past this as if this is insanity. You desperately hope I’m wrong.

But you know the risk is real. You know we are captured by insanity—and this post isn’t what’s doing it.

Because you know we’re not immune. Your memories from history class know that the risk is real.

Like when Germans laughed at the fear mongering. Then walked into fascism, and got their Brown Shirts.

Like when Italy had a modern constitutional parliament. Then walked into fascism, and got their Squadristi.

Like when Spain enjoyed their streetside cafes like we enjoy our Starbucks. Then walked into fascism, and got their Falange.

Like when Romanians respected their neighbors. Then walked into fascism, and got their Iron Guard.

On and on, nations are shocked by their descent into fascism, and always too late. Then they simply have to face their daily reality: widespread, murderous domestic terror tacitly authorized by the leader to enforce conformity through extralegal violence.

And each of these nations, they lived with it for decades.

Not months.

Not until the next election.

Decades.

This election isn’t about policy. It never has been. I’d give my neighbor 100% of every single policy demand she’s ever had, no matter what side of the aisle she is on, as long as we don’t accept the risk of an autocrat who can destroy history’s most blessed system itself.

Because don’t think we’re immune from system destruction. The system was created by power, and can be destroyed with power. And history shows that that power is often ceded willingly.

Be on the right side of history.
