Anthropology is more than just fieldwork and ethnographic analysis. You likely engage with the work of anthropologists every day and don't even know it! The discipline has been applied in a multitude of fields from public health to resource management to urban planning.

Anthropologists also work directly with communities to help address issues, serving as public liaisons between the people and governments or corporations.

As we continue to learn more about comic art, and its significance within the anthropology field, we decided to give it a try ourselves! This week we attempted to create single panel comics, drawing from Ivan Brunetti's cartooning exercises in his book Cartooning.

For Letizia Bonanno (@letha_laetitia) , illustrating her fieldwork in Athens was a method for translating her work. The drawings functioned as a way to grapple with theories, reflect on her work, and to capture themes of work and solidarity in ways that go beyond words.

Exploration of comic art continues in class this week. Often comic art is not taken seriously in academic fields; however visual aids improve comprehension, appeals to the audiences emotions, can fill in gaps that textual language cannot, and creatively reaching new audiences.

This week in class we are beginning to look into making comics and how we can make comics to share anthropology. Earlier in the semester we looked at Unflattening by @Nsousanis , which is a longer graphic novel which looks at the way humans describe knowledge.

To highlight women who have contributed greatly to the field of anthropology, we must talk about Margaret Mead! Mead was a prominent American cultural anthropologist who was frequently referenced in the mass media during the 60’s and 70’s as an author and public speaker.

Mead found that masculinity was not necessarily expressed through aggressiveness and that femininity was not necessarily expressed through passivity.

She is also well known for her writing, Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies, which explored varying gender roles within three different tribes.
