The Epic Battle of Chawinda was a significant military engagement during the 1965 War. Major Z. U. Abbasi, an accomplished officer, was part of the Guides Cavalry and had recently settled in Quetta. On 11th September 1965, Guides Cavalry received orders to relieve pressure on Phillora following a Pakistani reverse. The Indians aimed to advance towards Bhagowal and Khakanwali in the west.
Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Ameer Gulistan Janjua, Guides Cavalry decided to launch an attack with two squadrons of M-48 tanks. Major Lateef led A Squadron, while Major Z.U. Abbasi led B Squadron. Both squadrons inflicted heavy casualties on the Indian tanks but fell short of the objective.
