Ramadan is one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. During Ramadan, many Muslims will abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset for 30 days. Families will have a pre-dawn meal and then an evening meal to break the fast. The timing of Ramadan changes each year because Muslims follow the lunar calendar. Some Muslims may begin fasting a day earlier and end a day later because of the diversity in the Muslim community.
he GECDSB is committed to inclusion and providing needed accommodations for Muslim students and staff. If you need an accommodation, please reach out to your supervisor. For more information, see the Ontario Human Rights Commission: https://t.co/KLB2irYY1V
Please join the GECDSB in wishing all Muslim students, coworkers and community members a blessed and peaceful Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak!
March 8th is International Women’s Day! The theme for #IWD2024 is “Inspire Inclusion”. The GECDSB celebrates all persons who identify as women and girls. However, it is important to note that equity for all women has not been achieved. It is our responsibility to stand up with Indigenous and Black women, racialized women, women with disabilities and 2SLGBTQIA+ women as we work to create a more equitable world for all. 🌎
The festival of lights is primarily celebrated by those of Hindu, Sikh and Jain faith, but is acknowledged across many South Asian countries. Celebrants may light candles in their homes and gather with their loved ones to rejoice in the triumph of good over evil. Happy Diwali!

September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On September 25th, 2023 the Greater Essex County District School Board held a ceremony to raise the Every Child Matters flag at the Administration Office. We would like to thank FNMI Student Support Worker Adrian Klein, students Migizii Wright and Autumn Michener, their families, members of the Indigenous Education Advisory Committee, Dr. Clara Howitt, Director of Education Vicki Houston, staff and everyone who joined us to honour all Residential School survivors and those who never made it home.
The Every Child Matters Flag has been raised at all GECDSB schools for the full week. The Canadian flag will be lowered this afternoon until Monday morning as a sign of reverence and respect to the Indigenous community.
