ICE smashed the window of a disabled Iraq War veteran, on his way to work, pepper-sprayed him, dragged him out at gunpoint, and locked him up for three days without charges.

Federal agents smashed his truck window, sprayed him with chemical agents, detained him for three days, denied him contact with his family, and released him without charges. He missed his daughter’s third birthday while sitting in a cell.

No person on American soil should fear being treated this way, least of all a citizen and veteran at the hands of his own government. A nation that can do this to a U.S. citizen and veteran can do it to anyone.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Denise Oliver-Velez—a professor, writer, editor, activist, community organizer, and lifelong freedom fighter whose commitment to justice helped inspire generations.

As a member of both the Young Lords and the Black Panther Party, Denise stood on the front lines of movements fighting for the liberation and empowerment of Black and Brown communities. Her journey reminds us that the struggle for justice is carried forward not only through protest, but through education, organizing, storytelling, and an unwavering commitment to the people.

Her voice mattered.
Her work mattered.
Her courage mattered.
And her legacy will continue to matter.

From the movement to the classroom and throughout her years of writing and advocacy, Denise dedicated her life to challenging injustice and ensuring that the stories and struggles of our communities were never forgotten.

May we honor her memory by continuing the work—educating, organizing, empowering, and fighting for a more just world.
