New (YouGov) poll: of 135 rural and semi-rural seats currently held by Labour, the party would lose 79 constituencies if a General Election were held tomorrow.

The new poll shows that Labour would lose 170 seats in total, resulting in them losing their majority by 85 seats. Labour’s loss of rural support would therefore play an overwhelming role in losing the ruling party their majority.

A recent poll by ORB commissioned by the Countryside Alliance found that over a quarter of rural people (28%) said they would be more likely to vote Labour if the party resets its relationship with the countryside.

The case for a rural reset between the government and rural people couldn’t be more obvious. Rural people are being clobbered by a range of damaging policies, from the family farm tax, hikes to NI and attacks on racing, shooting and trail hunting, all of which are completely out synch with the priorities of voters. These stark findings should hammer home the urgent need for the government to start legislating for rural people, not against them, while there is still time.

🚨 Farmers have described a “mad scramble” for SFI26 funding after the entire £233 million budget was allocated within hours.

For some, getting an application submitted meant dropping everything else. Organic dairy farmer Adam Westaway had started his application before taking a family member to a long-awaited hospital appointment. By the time he returned to finish it, the window had closed.

Interesting development following the launch of @CAupdates Campaign for Countryside last Monday where the family farm tax was denounced for the appalling policy that it is. Though not confirmed at this stage, it’s certainly positive to read some in the Labour Party are taking notice. They’re right to.

Scrapping the disastrous family farm tax would be a much welcome first step in beginning to repair the government’s approach to the countryside,  which for the last two years has been damaging both to rural communities and to Labour’s standing in the countryside.

We hope that this marks the start of an urgent reset across rural issues. Damaging policies have hit the countryside hard and alienated rural communities.

A shocking 27 damaging policies have been imposed on rural communities since 2024 — from the family farm tax and National Insurance rises, to affordability checks on horse racing, plans to ban trail hunting and restrict game shooting.

All of these measures could be avoided or changed, if only their impact on the countryside was understood.

It’s time for a rural reset.
