We take the blood supply for granted...until we need it. Millions still die each year because we can’t get blood where/when it’s needed. Artificial blood could change that. My latest for @PopMech@UMmedschool https://t.co/aMfopso2Tn
For @QuantaMagazine I wrote about this phenomenon in embryos... There is even evidence that cellular forces can affect gene expression https://t.co/ymBNM0G29j
Cells are so much more dynamic and physical than we give them credit for! Watching this neuron search for connections reminds me of how developmental cells push/pull their way into complex patterns
Biology is so dynamic and explorative.
The main actor here is a neuron, likely looking for a meaningful connection(s). Other cells on the right are likely fibroblasts actively dividing and migrating.
One of the reasons I love wildlife documentaries: nature is always weirder, more connected, and more surprising than we think. Adding this to my queue....
It’s International Jaguar Day! 🐆 Today we’re celebrating these wild cats with our new film, “Jaguar Beach,” which reveals the surprising connection between jaguars and sea turtles on a remote stretch of Costa Rica’s coast.

Los caballos de Islandia son los caballos vikingos originales y una de las razas más puras del mundo. La raza ha estado aislada en esta escarpada isla del Atlántico Norte desde su asentamiento, hace más de 1000 años.
For decades, neurons got all the attention. Now, we’re discovering the brain’s supporting cast might be just as important. New research shows that star-shaped astrocytes play a *starring role* in mouse models of depression. My latest for @PNASNews https://t.co/Ftb7QGrQOj
Researchers have been tinkering with pig genetics in order to make donor animals whose organs are more compatible with our own...want to know how close they are? Check out my new article for Nature Lab Animal https://t.co/tJocHJRhmA
A recent TIG paper is featured in an "Inner Workings" article out today in PNAS. Check it out!

I got to write about a really cool study for the
@nytimes that combines good ole fashion detective work with pollen #DNAmetabarcoding to mark the longest insect flight ever recorded! https://t.co/L5ktxoLZPC
Genetic information flows in one direction, from DNA to RNA to protein. But a new discovery about a bacterial immune system complicates and adds nuance to this so-called central dogma...I wrote about it for @PNASNews https://t.co/YcDvmn0ae2
In In the future, emergency rooms might offer more specialized services for cancer patients, orthopedics and even geriatrics. These emergency rooms could offer better service at lower costs, but start up costs are high. My latest for @AnnalsofEM https://t.co/hkAN5MJMp5
@lssciencenews@ScienceNews With the new work and complementary research, details of our brain are increasingly coming into focus. In 2018 @mo_brouillette wrote for Quanta about a technique that enabled neuroscientists to map the connections between individual brain cells.

BIG NEWS: I'm starting a @Medium pub on #LongCovid, an incredibly important but undercovered issue. Here's my "coming soon" post for the "Long COVID Connection," soft-launching in ~a week. I'll post a call for writers soon too. Pls share!

Research show that when indigenous groups lead conservation efforts, they achieve better outcomes than governments alone. Last summer, I got a @pulitzercenter grant to travel to Alaska to report on a Native Alaskan group given authority over conservation efforts. My story...
Native Alaskans seek a stronger role in environmental management after being excluded from traditional hunting grounds due to past conservation efforts. Evidence shows that Indigenous leadership can lead to better outcomes. https://t.co/pv4IGsSPpL
